Casement vs Double-Hung Windows: Which Should You Choose?

Casement and double-hung windows are two of the most common, and most different, window styles. One cranks open like a door; the other slides up and down. Each has real strengths, and the better choice depends on the room, your priorities, and your home's style. Here's a clear side-by-side.

How Each One Works

A double-hung window has two sashes that slide vertically; both the top and bottom can open, and on modern units both tilt inward for cleaning. A casement window is hinged on one side and swings outward with a crank, opening the entire window to the outside like a door.

Airflow and Energy Efficiency

This is where casement windows shine. Because the sash swings fully open, a casement provides maximum ventilation and can even 'scoop' a side breeze into the room. And because the sash presses tight against the frame when closed, casements typically have the best air seal of any operable window, which means excellent energy efficiency.

Double-hung windows offer good, controllable airflow, you can open the top, the bottom, or both, but their sliding design has a slightly looser seal than a casement. Quality double-hung units are still very efficient; casements just have the edge on a windy day.

For a tight seal and max airflow, think kitchens over a counter, or hard-to-reach spots, casement wins. For familiar looks and flexible venting, double-hung is the everyday favorite.

Casement windows have no center rail, so they offer a cleaner, unobstructed view. Double-hung windows have a meeting rail in the middle, but their tilt-in sashes make cleaning both sides easy from inside, a real plus for upper floors. Casements are also easy to clean from inside on many models, though the crank mechanism is one more part that can eventually need service.

Style and Cost

Double-hung windows suit traditional, colonial, and craftsman homes and are the most recognizable style in America. Casements give a cleaner, more contemporary line. On price, double-hung windows are usually a bit more affordable, while casements often cost slightly more for the same size, though the difference is modest and varies by brand and glass package.

Which Is Right for You?

Choose casement windows for the best seal, maximum ventilation, unobstructed views, and a modern look, ideal over kitchen counters and in rooms where you want airflow and efficiency. Choose double-hung windows for classic style, flexible top/bottom venting, easy cleaning on upper floors, and a slightly lower cost. Many homes use both, casements where airflow and efficiency matter most, double-hung everywhere else.
