Entry Door Buying Guide: Steel, Fiberglass, or Wood?

Your front door is the first thing guests see and one of the most important barriers between your home and Utah's extreme climate. Steel, fiberglass, and wood each have distinct advantages. Here's how to choose.

Steel Doors

Steel doors are the most affordable option and offer excellent security. They're energy-efficient, low-maintenance, and resistant to warping or cracking. The downside: they can dent and may rust if the finish is damaged, though modern powder-coat finishes largely prevent this.

Fiberglass Doors

Fiberglass is our most recommended material for Utah. It won't warp, crack, or rot regardless of temperature extremes. It can be painted or stained to mimic wood grain beautifully. It's more expensive than steel but outlasts both steel and wood in Utah's climate.

Wood Doors

Wood doors offer unmatched natural beauty and can be refinished multiple times. However, Utah's dry air and temperature swings cause wood to expand and contract, requiring more maintenance. Expect to refinish or repaint every 2–3 years.

For most Utah homes, fiberglass offers the best balance of durability, energy efficiency, appearance, and low maintenance.
